No Sewing This Weekend

Sadly there has been no sewing this weekend as we travelled up the coast to a friends party. It was a great catchup with old friends and lovely weather for camping. But I had plenty of time to think about creative things. I want to explore doing Quilt As You Go and couching on my Longarm machine.  Also somehow using my collection of upholstery samples. I’m thinking of quilting them directly onto the backing and maybe sashing the edges over with a braid. I need to get in the studio and get started tomorrow to see how these ideas work.

Plus Quilt

I finished putting this together yesterday.  For some quilts you definitely need a bed to lay out all the blocks. My machine is right next to this one so I pick up rows and sew them and place them back so I know I have the layout right.

I love this range from Robert Kaufman and all the gold tints.

Happy quilting.

My Jane Austen’s Bonnets is now finished!!

This quilt has been a few years in the making and I am so pleased it is now complete.  The embroidering and beadwork took a couple of winters and then it took some planning and preparation to work up to piecing the blocks. The completed quilt top, with backing and binding, have been waiting for my Handiquilter Avante to join the family to be able to do justice to the quilting.

When I saw the pattern, I knew it just had to be a “pretty” quilt, so I hunted down the gorgeous rosebud fabric with matching pink and ivory pearl fabric.

So thanks to The Country Quilt Co for the Brenda Ryan pattern and to the Rose Cottage for the fabrics.  These are both terrific local stores here in Ipswich, Qld.  I machine quilted it with designs from One Song Needle Arts.  The classic feathery, lacey designs were just what I was looking for to set this quilt off.

I will be hanging it in my studio so it can inspire me everyday.

Happy Quilting everyone,

Lyn.

Sewing on a gloomy Sunday and a new Princess

it wasn’t deliberate but I found myself making a baby quilt with a Princess theme on this day when we have news of a new baby Princess.  Sorry no pics because I am making it for someone else but it was a lovely way to spend a morning.

Tomorrow I am all organised for quilting 2 cot quilts so I must decide on a couple of cute patterns to suit the designs.  So much choice.

My darling daughter and her boyfriend are travelling in Washinton and called this morning. We are heading into winter and she is enjoying all the Spring flowers.

Finished the afternoon off with the potbelly burning and an episode of Outlander. That Jamie Fraser!

Happy quilting.

On the frame this rainy day in Queensland

Thankfully my downstairs studio is warmer than my upstairs lounge so I had no trouble going down to sew this morning despite the rain.

I put together a cot quilt for my niece to give away, so I have had a lesson in what the modern new mother wants in her nursery.

Then I put a kids quilt on the Avante and tried out a new design.  I have been using up my scraps to make kids quilts for the worthwhile Linus Quilts cause, so now I am working through quilting them. Upstairs hand sewing a binding on with the heater on, now the rain has really set in.

Happy Quilting.

Quilters Law and Bobbin Fluff

You all know that Quilter’s Law – the one that says the bobbin will always run out with about a square foot to go.  Well I should have expected it to happen today.

The 2nd lesson today is that even if you can’t see any fluff in your bobbin casing, then still give it a good clean.  I was having thread problems and I got to the bobbin with a business card and yet another piece of fluff came out.  A thorough daily cleaning is now part of the routine.

Very productive day after all – 3 quilts finished.  Small picture today, a bigger one tomorrow when I get it off the frame.
